Rolling and bouncing a ball

Physical Education · Early Years · The School

Rolling towards a target

Sit or crouch low. Push the ball along the ground with both hands. Aim it at a target, like a cone or a skittle. Watch the ball all the way, right until it reaches the target, or rolls just past it.

Bouncing and catching

Push the ball down towards the ground with both hands. Let it bounce back up. Catch it with both hands as it rises. Push, bounce, catch. That is the whole pattern, done again and again, faster each time you try, until it feels natural.

Down low, not up high

A rolled or bounced ball stays low, near the ground. Get your hands down low too, ready to meet it. That is different from catching a ball thrown up near your chest. Ground skills and air skills use your body quite differently.

Try to bounce and catch a ball ten times in a row, without dropping it once. Push it down. Let it rise. Catch it. Push it down again. Count out loud as you go. If you drop it, do not worry — just start your count again from one. Most people need several tries before they reach ten. Getting there takes real practice, not luck at all.
