Same subject, different artists

Art & Design · Key Stage 1 · The School

One subject, many pictures

Ask ten artists to paint the same tree. You get ten different pictures back. Some are careful and neat. Some are bold and bright. Some are made mostly of shapes. None of them is the one correct tree picture.

What changes between two pictures

Two pictures of the same tree can look very different. The colours can be different. The amount of detail can be different. The shapes can be exact or simple. Even the mood can be different. The real tree stays the same the whole time. Every choice belongs to the artist.

Why this matters for your work

Your tree drawing is not wrong just because it is not a photograph. You choose the colour. You choose the detail. You choose the shape. Those choices make the picture yours. A real artist makes the same kind of choices too.

Two very different sunflowers

Picture one shows a sunflower slowly and carefully. Every petal is neat. The colours are soft yellows and browns. Picture two shows a sunflower in a rush. The paint is thick and bold. The colours are bright yellow and orange. The petal shapes are rough, not neat. Both pictures are clearly sunflowers. Neither one is more correct than the other. They are just two different answers to the same question.

Choosing your own way

Pick a subject you know well, like a tree or a flower. Decide on purpose: careful and neat, or bold and rough. Both are real choices. Neither one is a mistake. Both belong in art equally. Make your choice today.
