Looking at a picture together
Art & Design · Early Years · The School
What can you see?
Look at a picture for a whole minute. Say out loud everything you can see in it. People. Animals. Colours. Weather. A place. There is no wrong answer here — just say what is actually there. Nobody is checking against one hidden correct list.
How does it make you feel?
Some pictures feel calm. Some feel busy or exciting. Some feel a little sad. Ask yourself how a picture makes you feel, and try to say WHY. Is it the colours? Is it what is happening in it? Is it the faces of the people inside it?
Look again, slower
Look at the same picture again, even more slowly this time. Check the corners. Check the background. Most people spot something new on a second, slower look that they missed completely the first time.
Show the same picture to two different people. Ask them both what they notice first. One might notice a person's face straight away. The other might notice the colour of the sky instead. Neither one is wrong. A good picture can be looked at in more than one way, and that is exactly why people can look at the very same picture for a long time and still find something new in it.
